About the Alcazaba
Historical Background
The Alcazaba was ordered to be built in the 10th century by Abd al-Rahman III, the ruler of Al-Andalus. It was initially not only a military fortress but also the local political and administrative center, witnessing Almería's prosperity during Islamic rule.
Architecture & Layout
The castle is divided into three main enclosures: the first enclosure was once a civilian residential area and is now a beautiful garden; the second enclosure was the historical core, containing ruins of palaces, baths, and mosques; the third enclosure is a defensive fortress added by the Catholic Monarchs after the Reconquista.
Cultural Significance
As an important cultural heritage of Andalusia (BIC), the Alcazaba blends Islamic and Christian architectural styles. It is not only a symbol of the local area but has also served as a filming location for famous movies and TV series (such as Game of Thrones).
Archaeology & Preservation
This is a key protected historical heritage of the Andalusian region. Successive archaeological excavations continue to reveal the rich historical strata of this complex, and the government carries out ongoing restoration projects to protect these precious monuments.

A spectacular historical monument, very well preserved. The views of Almería from the top are unbeatable.
The gardens in the first enclosure are stunning; the water features and plants are very calming. Absolutely worth a visit!
Deep historical significance. The climb is a bit tiring, but seeing the third enclosure's fortress and the sea makes it all worthwhile.
One of the most magnificent Moorish castles I've seen in Andalusia. Not as crowded as Granada, making for a great experience.
Highly recommended for history and architecture lovers. The fact that Game of Thrones was filmed here is also a fun highlight.
Remember to bring water if visiting in summer. The views are breathtaking, and the whole complex makes you feel the prosperity of a thousand years ago.
